The last week saw the Tasmania JackJumpers making moves of all forms: they announced that their starting import guard Jordon Crawford was not returning, replaced him with another import guard and also re-signed a development player from last season to the main roster. The Adelaide 36ers also bring back their All-NBL ex-NBA import forward.

Montrezl Harrell re-signs with Adelaide 36ers
Position: Forward
2024–25 statistics: 20.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.1 blocks, .6 steals, 56.0% field goal, 32.0% three-point, 65.1% free throw
The Adelaide 36ers’ addition of Montrezl Harrell as an injury replacement for Jarell Martin was a spectacular signing last season; his re-signing for a second season was less earth-shattering than the Bryce Cotton addition of last week (which is only to state how big the Cotton signing is!). It was a firm consensus that Harrell was not returning this season – it remains unclear whether that was due to the team or him – but the Cotton news obviously ushered change when he openly pondered on X: “Do y’all want the Monsta back down under in Adelaide”. Only a few days later and Harrell committed to the 36ers for another season. Harrell’s NBA experience puts him in the upper echelon of talents to join the NBL with eight seasons there and he showcased that he is still in his athletic prime despite recovering from an ACL injury that saw him miss the 2023–24 season. His 36ers stint was always seen as a rehabilitation for his re-entry to the NBA but no return occurred this off-season and he has instead spent time playing in China and Puerto Rico. It is reasonable to expect that he could perform even better this season with his injury fully healed and his benefit from acclimatisation to the league; this is not even to mention his partnering with Cotton. The 36ers have shared that they are still anticipating the addition of one either import or high-level local forward which puts their roster composition in question: will it be either their pricey new local Flynn Cameron losing his starting small forward position or will Harrell be played at center at the expense of Isaac Humphries? Regardless, the pairing of Harrell and Cotton is perhaps the most talented NBL duo in many years and it will be exciting to see them together.
David Johnson to Tasmania JackJumpers
Position: Guard
From: Memphis Hustle (NBA G League)
2024–25 statistics: 16.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, .5 blocks, .6 steals, 46.7% field goal, 41.9% three-point, 76.2% free throw
The Tasmania JackJumpers put out a release thanking the contributions of their supremely undersized shooting guard Jordon Crawford who has been with the team for two seasons; they then announced the signing of a player who is more in the vein of their other longterm import Milton Doyle who is still yet to be re-signed. David Johnson is the same height (6’4″), also had a brief NBA experience (two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors in 2021–22) and similarly possesses ball handling abilities despite being a natural shooting guard. Johnson is only 24-years-old and is about to embark on his first overseas experience after four years in the NBA G League system with the Raptors 905 and Memphis Hustle. Johnson will be poised to have a solid showing this season. It will be interesting to see what the JackJumpers now do with their remaining roster. Will they bring back Doyle for a three-guard line-up? Will they bring in an import forward to replace the gaping hole left by the absence of Jack McVeigh? With only one regular slot available (their roster stands at 10 players), it is a decision to alter their entire starting composition. We still have several months left to find out.
Nicholas Stoddart re-signs with Tasmania JackJumpers
Position: Guard
2024–25 statistics: 4.3 points, 1.2 rebounds, .9 assists, .2 blocks, 1.0 steals, 48.6% field goal, 61.5% three-point, 50.0% free throw
The Tasmania JackJumpers reward their former development player Nicholas Stoddart with a promotion to a full contract for the upcoming season. He showed flashes of his full potential during his 10 appearances last season; he scored 14 points as an unexpected starter against the South East Melbourne Phoenix and also dropped 9 points off the bench against the Adelaide 36ers. The JackJumpers have shown their ability to foster local point guard talent with the development of Sean Macdonald and Stoddart could be expected to have a similar trajectory.
