The NBA Summer League started this week which is usually a pivotal part of the NBL offseason as teams go there to scout new talent. It has been still a relatively quiet period for signings including for imports with all except for one being re-signings. The streak continued this last week with the Tasmania JackJumpers re-signing their star import and returning a key local which means the completion of their roster (albeit with an injury replacement and development players still to be announced). The Perth Wildcats add a development player to their roster.

The Wildcats also announced the departure of Ben Henshall who finally gets the opportunity to play college basketball. It was a sad affair last season where he was poised to make the move to the United States in some form (also declaring for the draft) but ended up being unable to do so and returned to the Wildcats. Henshall finally has the ability to pursue his dream and signed to play for the Ole Miss Rebels.

Anthony Drmic re-signs with Tasmania JackJumpers

The Tasmania JackJumpers make another re-signing by bringing back Anthony Drmic for what will be his fourth season. The team’s vice captain only played 14 games last season due to a back injury which he thought symbolised the end of his career. It resulted in him assuming more of a leadership role off-the-court which the JackJumpers valued and made retaining him a priority. Drmic has returned to form during the offseason with the Hobart Chargers and will hopefully bring that same capability when the season begins.

Bryce Hamilton was one of the outstanding additions to the league during his first season with the Tasmania JackJumpers until he was derailed by an ACL injury in January. He now gets the opportunity for a comeback by signing a two-year contract with the JackJumpers which will emphasise him as one of the team’s main components. Hamilton’s re-signing means that the JackJumpers have retained the majority of their starters from last season with only Tyger Campbell having his position replaced by Taran Armstrong. It does also mean that the JackJumpers signed three imports who are all effectively shooting guards which is a fascinating roster construction. The JackJumpers’ announcement of Hamilton’s re-signing mentions no date for his return but does not that he will have an injury replacement to start the season. Keeping Hamilton for this season through his rehabilitation and then having him locked in for another full season is an excellent investment. It will be great when he is back.

The Perth Wildcats add another development player to their roster with local guard Marley Sam joining on a three-year contract. The 17-year-old has spent the last three seasons in the NBL1 West with the Eastern Suns where his role has steadily progressed to the present season where he is a starter with very efficient numbers and an incredible defensive ability (3.3 steals per game!). Sam was a consideration to play college basketball in the United States but he instead decided to stay at home and begin his professional career with his local team. Alongside Luke Paul at the Cairns Taipans, Sam will be among the impressive young talent showing their ability this season.
