Preseason action truly began in the NBL this week yet the same three teams as last week still wait to find their final pieces. The Perth Wildcats still need their import guard as a replacement for their greatest player of all time, the South East Melbourne Phoenix are yet to locate their final local spot and the Illawarra Hawks are relatively covered across the board despite still needing two more players. The eager anticipation from Wildcats fans was relatively abated this week with the announcement of a new development player with familial connections while the Sydney Kings added their own two prospects as development players.

Lueth Awan to Sydney Kings

Position: Guard
From: Norths Bears (NBL1 East)
2025 statistics: .0 points, .0 rebounds, .3 assists, .0 blocks, .0 steals, 0.0% field goal, 0.0% three-point, 0.0% free throw

Awan earns the first NBL involvement of his career by signing with the Sydney Kings as a development player. He spent time with the Norths Bears in the 2025 NBL1 East season yet did not get almost any playing time across his four appearances. Awan made his debut for the Kings in their preseason game against the Tasmania JackJumpers where he accumulated more minutes in the one appearance than his entire Bears stint; he scored 11 points on 66.7% field goal. Awan is a 6’7″ guard who prides himself on his defensive desires; he will get to develop himself alongside one of the league’s premier defensive players with a similar build in Bul Kuol.

Goc Malual to Sydney Kings

Position: Forward
From: Sydney Comets (NBL1 East)
2025 statistics: 10.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, .1 assists, .4 blocks, .6 steals, 64.7% field goal, 64.7% free throw

The Sydney Kings also gift Goc Malual with the first development player contract of his career after a stint with the Sydney Comets in NBL1 East. He posted decent scoring and rebounding numbers in his seven appearances. Malual has also represented the Australian national team at the junior level. He has only been playing basketball for eight years and will continue to make strives through his Kings association.

Jaron Rillie to Perth Wildcats

Position: Guard
From: Northern Colorado Bears (United States – NCAA Division I)
2024–25 statistics: 12.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists, .1 blocks, 1.0 steals, 48.4% field goal, 40.5% three-point, 82.7% free throw

The Perth Wildcats bring home Jaron Rillie who has spent the last five seasons playing college basketball at Samford and Northern Colorado. His last two seasons at Northern Colorado saw him as a permanent starter and he thrived in the role with decent scoring and assist numbers as well as impressive rebounding numbers for a 6’3″ guard. Anyone who read the initial press release put out by the Wildcats about Rillie’s signing would have been hit with two matters for pondering. One, Rillie coincidentally has the same initial and last name as Wildcats head coach John Rillie. Two, Rillie looks exactly like John Rillie with a voluptuous head of hair. Yes, the Wildcats — for some unknown reason — forewent the linking of Rillie to his head coach father. Was this to avoid the connotation that comes with a father getting his son on the team? Did the team not want Rillie to be associated with his father? It was a bizarre omission. Rillie is worth the look and should be beyond nepotism claims.
