This was the last full week prior to the commencement of the regular season on 18 September 2025 and the last major signing has finally been completed. The Perth Wildcats secure their third and final import in the guard that they desperately needed more than any team in any sort of recent existence. The Illawarra Hawks now persist as the only team requiring a fully rostered player to be added but they have no specific need nor general urgency. The Brisbane Bullets also signed a nominated replacement player who holds a resume far beyond that of being a nominated replacement player.

Mason Jones to Perth Wildcats

Position: Guard

The Perth Wildcats made a conscious decision to let the greatest player of all time — not only for them but for the entire league’s history — walk away and sign with another team in the same competition. The legacy of 5x MVP Bryce Cotton was always going to loom large over whoever the Wildcats signed to replace him; fortunately for the Wildcats, they managed to secure someone who might ease the stinging pain of loss. Mason Jones is a fringe NBA player like Cotton was and a high-scoring guard like Cotton is. He also has the height of a shooting guard but can play like a point guard; he is the anti-Cotton in that manner. Jones is coming off a two-way stint with the Sacramento Kings and their G League affiliate Stockton Kings during which time he led Stockton to a championship as the Finals MVP. His 10 NBA appearances last season are listed above but he averaged 23.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists in the G League. Jones is the real deal and a truly great signing for the Wildcats to make. The team’s success in making the wait worthwhile is a relief and Jones’ presence makes the team into a true championship contender.

Lamar Patterson to Brisbane Bullets

It is a triumphant return for the LP as Lamar Patterson signed as a nominated replacement player for the Brisbane Bullets. It has been three seasons since Patterson last played in the league and seven years since he first arrived on the Bullets. He was a two-time All-NBL first team member during his first two seasons, had a tough tenure with the New Zealand Breakers, and then spent two meandering seasons with the Bullets. Patterson has been plying away in the NBL1 for the last three years and had his most dominant season yet as part of the Ipswich Force this year. Patterson is supposedly on the cusp of becoming an Australian citizen so — until that happens — his only applicable roster spot is as a replacement player for any of the three Bullets’ imports when they sit out. It is a great result for Patterson to make it back after all those years of dedication.
