The Brisbane Bullets have found their replacement for Javon Freeman-Liberty in Dakota Mathias. They are both shooting guards, have both made NBA appearances, both spent most of their professional careers in the NBA G League but have one key difference: Mathias has had multiple international tenures. The Bullets have played it safe this time after the unfortunate premature departure of Freeman-Liberty so he could return home.
Mathias spent last season with the Indiana Mad Ants of the NBA G League where he averaged 17.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists. He was there after almost making the roster of the Indiana Pacers; he had previously played in the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2020–21 and Memphis Grizzlies in 2021–22. Mathias has also played overseas with stints in Spain and Germany.
Mathias is an excellent scorer so he will be able to replace the offensive punch that Freeman-Liberty was scheduled to deliver. He is also a high level three-point shooter with a percentage in the high 30s throughout his professional career; that was one area where Freeman-Liberty struggled with only one made three-point shot in his two appearances.
The Bullets are still yet to completely work it out despite having a talented roster and three head coaches. They will be hoping that Mathias is the final component to complete the equation.
