Bul Kuol went down in the second quarter of the Sydney Kings game against the Adelaide 36ers a few days ago. While preparing to contest what would have otherwise been an open layup for Nick Rakocevic, Kuol had a combination of stopping awkwardly on his right leg and a small knock from Rakocevic. He went down instantly while grabbing his right knee and did not return to the game. The Kings have announced that he is now ruled out for the rest of the season due to an ACL injury.
It was perhaps testament to Kuol’s abilities that the 36ers were down 26–35 at the time he left the game; they came back to win it 85–79 for their first victory over the Kings all season. Kuol was a consistent nightmare on defence. Standing at 6’7″, he possessed the lateral quickness to defend either guards or forwards which would make him an incredibly effective presence. Kuol seemingly decided to concentrate solely on his defensive abilities after moving to the Kings in 2024 after averaging a career-high 12.7 points per game with the Cairns Taipans the previous season. He has only averaged single-figure scoring averages since including 6.7 points per game this season. Even still, Kuol had been enjoying the most efficient year of his career with 51.7 field goal and 44.0 three-point percentages. However, it is that defensive versatility which makes Kuol such a valuable commodity for the Kings as they already possessed their adequate scoring options.
Fortunately for the Kings, they possess the opportunity to find a replacement for Kuol as they have only been utilising two imports this season. More than anything, they will need to find some front court depth as they only have Tim Soares who is above 6’8″ which makes them vulnerable if anything was to happen to him. Losing that defensive anchor and aggressor archetype in Kuol will be a loss but it is unlikely that the Kings will find an adequate replacement. I do not know if anyone realised how potent Kuol’s defence was when it came to the success of the Kings; it really did look like they were the only team in the league who would undoubtedly provide a problem for the top-of-the-ladder 36ers.
Kuol will be a big loss but hopefully he will be able to recover for next season. It will be interesting to see who the Kings get as a replacement; ideally, not a repeat of the Lamonte Turner difficulties from last season.
