Week three of NBL27 free agency passes with three signings. Two moves are made by the South East Melbourne Phoenix to their local contingent with a championship-winning Nominated Replacement Player and one of the hottest commodities in free agency. The third is by the New Zealand Breakers with the return of a local from an American collegiate career for his first professional stint.

Elsewhere, two head coaches ended their contracts prematurely. Dean Vickerman leaves Melbourne United after nine seasons at the helm during which time he was a two-time champion and three-time Coach of the Year so he can pursue other opportunities. Mike Wells also departs Adelaide 36ers after an chaos-packed two seasons. That means four teams have head coaching vacancies: the 36ers, United, New Zealand Breakers and Cairns Taipans.

The S.E. Melbourne Phoenix bolster their frontcourt with the signing of Hunter Goodrick from Sydney Kings. For his first professional season in Australia, Goodrick was signed as a Nominated Replacement Player and saw frequent use throughout NBL26 with an average of 2.1 points during 28 appearances. Despite standing at 6’7″, Goodrick proved his efficiency as a rebounder with 2.6 per game. He had his season-best performance with 6 points and 10 rebounds against Melbourne United; he also posted a Dennis Rodman-esque 1 point and 9 rebounds against United later in the season. Expect Goodrick to see his role continue to develop with the Phoenix.

It was said that the two primary local free agent targets were Makuach Maluach and Tanner Krebs; the former stayed with the Sydney Kings while the latter makes a crosstown move from Melbourne United to the S.E. Melbourne Phoenix. Krebs, in his sixth professional season, had a career-best year with United with new highs in efficiency as a result of his thriving in a reserve role. Krebs makes the move to the Phoenix and has the opportunity to continue to contribute to a championship team.

The New Zealand Breakers introduce the first new rookie to the league this season with the recruitment of the immaculately-named Preston Le Gassick. Spending the last four years playing collegiately in the United States, he finished his career with Palm Beach Atlantic in NCAA Division II where he showed his well-rounded ability. Le Gassick has also been playing in the NBL1 and emerged there as a dominant offensive force. Born and raised in Australia, Le Gassick has a New Zealand mother.
